National Radon Action Month

Radon is a colorless, odorless, naturally occurring gas released in rock, soil, and water. It can increase to dangerous levels inside any home.

Health Risks of Radon
Radon can increase your risk of lung cancer. It is the number one cause of lung cancer among non-smokers and the 2nd
leading cause of cancer among smokers. If you smoke (or live with someone who does) and your home has a high radon level, your risk of lung cancer is even higher.

Radon Testing
The ONLY way to know if your home has dangerous levels of radon is by testing. Every home should be tested before or soon after you move into it. It’s as simple as opening package, placing the test in the appropriate area, sending it in and waiting for the results. Test kits can be purchased at home improvement stores and/or online. Alternatively, you can order a test at
www.njradon.org or by calling the NJDEP Radon Program’s Information Line at 800.648.0394.

How to Fix a Radon Problem
If radon levels in your home are high, you do have options. Call the NJDEP Radon Program’s Information Line at 800.648.0394 to obtain a list of the qualified radon mitigators in your area. You may also find local companies in the phone book.
